ABC Express
What is ABC Express?
ABC ( Asheville, Boone, Cullowhee)
Express is a document delivery service operated by the libraries of Appalachian State University, UNC-Asheville, and Western Carolina University. It is available only to students, faculty and staff of these three institutions. If you need a book, journal or other library material that is not held in your library, you may be able to obtain it through ABC Express. If one of the other two libraries owns the item, ABC Express can usually have it for you in one to four days.
ABC Express is NOT the same as Interlibrary Loan
Through Interlibrary Loan, you may request books or photocopies of journal articles not available through ABC Express from other libraries. These requests will take a considerably longer time to fill (usually around two weeks).

How Do I Order Books & Journals (Bound or Microform)?
- Find the book or journal title in the library catalog and display it on the computer screen.
- Verify that the Status box shows "NOT CHK'D OUT."
- Click on the grey Request button at the top or bottom of the screen. Enter your name as it appears on your ID card, your ID number, and select a pickup location. Click the Submit button.
- Select the issue or volume you want.
- Click on the gray Request Selected Item bar at the bottom of the screen. You may only select one issue or volume at a time.
- All materials can be picked up at your Circulation Desk. Books, films, videos and DVDs are held for you for seven (7) days before being returned to the lending library.
How Do I Order Journals That are NOT Bound or Microform?
- Complete a pink journal-request located at the Reference Desk. Request only one issue per request form.
- All materials can be picked up at your Circulation Desk.
How Do I Order Materials That are NOT Books or Journals?
- Certain non-book and journal materials can be ordered through ABC Express, others cannot. Ask at your Reference Desk for assistance.
- All materials can be picked up at your Circulation Desk.
How Long Can I Keep Materials?
- You may check books out for 3 weeks; renewals are allowed.
- Journals will be returned on the next ABC Express run; no renewals are allowed.
- Faculty, staff, and graduate students receive a 2-day loan. (This is a pilot project being tested from May 26, 2008 through August 15, 2008)
- Undergraduates receive a 6-hour in-house loan
- $.20 per DAY overdue fine on borrowed materials.
- $.50 per HOUR overdue fine on journals sent to ASU patrons.
